Well I've completed my first week of training. I've run 7.1 Miles this week all on the treadmill at Gold's gym. I plan on getting some road work in this week. I'm not a big fan of cold weather and I'm dreading getting out there. I am also working hard on getting my weight down. I need to drop about 40 pounds in order to even have a shot at completing Boston in 2011. I've been alcohol free for 10 days (which is kinda hard when watching playoff football) and I'm eating about 1,200 calories a day. So I know in time I'll get there. Right now I am just focused on getting my pace down. (currently at 11:18 a mile) Goal is 10 minute miles (5k run) by end of February. I have a race on the 24th of January. This course is mostly flat so I'm thinking I'll beat my previous race time. I would love to run it in 31:00 minutes. We'll see!
Corey,
ReplyDeleteA great way to start off the new year! Don't worry about your pace right now. Just get some time on your feet, even if you run a little and walk a little. The pace will come down all by itself, pretty quickly. I started running (seriously) back in 2000 after almost 15yrs off. My first run was something like 12 min pace, maybe 2 miles. A couple months later I ran my first 1/2 marathon.
If you haven't already, I'd suggest joining a running club. It's a great way to meet up with like minded folks of all abilities and it'll get you and keep you motivated.
Running's hard...for EVERYBODY...starting off. But if you can stick with it for a few months it DOES get easier and you might even enjoy it :-)
Good luck.
Steve
hey Steve,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the kind words. Im not to worried about my pace right now, however I am very competitive and always push myself to do better. I am actaully doing another 5k on the 24th (freeze your buns off 5k) and have also signed up for the half marathon run in Rye, NH on March 28th. So if you have any tips from time to time please share. :) What running clubs do you recommend for a newbie?
I'd recommend the Gate City Striders in Nashua. They have tons of coaches for all abilities plus members of all abilities. The Freeze your Buns series is put on by GCS in fact. Feel free to email me with any questions you might have.
